  • Book Review: CALL TO ARMS

    call to arms cover

Call to Arms, by Shiriluna Nott and SaJa H., is a thoroughly delightful book brimming with details that make the setting and characters come alive. It grabbed me from the start and I couldn’t put it down. I could almost taste the described foods and feel Gib’s embarrassment as he struggled to grasp the formalities and rules of his new home. Throughout the story, he learns things about himself that he never dreamed of. This is a beautiful coming of age and self-discovery story with themes of acceptance, bigotry, social stratification, gender equality, and sexual identity. The hatred and distain shown to those who are different is all too real.

  • WOLF NOTES: An Uncommon Interview – A. L. Sirois

081Welcome to WOLF NOTES, where interview questions stray from the rest of the pack. It’s nice to know the usual stuff like where an author gets their inspiration and why they write, but sometimes we need a little fun in our lives.

    This week I welcome A. L. Sirois

alAndGraceA. L. Sirois is also a developmental editor, graphic artist and a performing musician. He has had fiction published in Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine, Fantastic, Amazing Stories, and Thema, and online at Electric Spec, Every Day Fiction and Flash Fiction Online, among other publications. His story In the Conservatory was nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Other works include a children’s book, Dinosaur Dress Up (Tambourine Press / William Morrow). His graphic novel, THE ENDLESS INCIDENT, based on a video game, was published in February, 2016. Al has been playing drums for over fifty years in rock and jazz combos. As an artist, he has hundreds of drawings, paintings and illustrations to his credit. Al has contributed comic art for DC, Marvel, and Charlton, and has scripted for Warren Publications. He wrote and drew “Bugs in the System” for witzend #12, the famous comics fanzine started by for MAD artist Wally Wood. He lives in Rockingham County, North Carolina with his wife and occasional collaborator, author Grace Marcus. Together they are writing a Young Adult novel set in ancient Egypt.

Wolf: If you could be any animal in the universe, what would it be and why?

    A. L.: Tough one, because we don’t know what animals exist on other planets. Excluding those, however, I guess I’d have to opt for an otter. They seem to truly enjoy life.

Wolf: What is the nicest thing you’ve ever done to your characters?

    A. L.: I don’t kill too many of them. I generally let them have happy endings.

Wolf: What is the meanest thing you’ve ever done to your characters?

    A. L.: I had one experimented on by a government-sponsored institute. It didn’t end well.

Wolf: Do you consider yourself a cat person, or a dog person?

    A. L.: Both. We currently have a cat but are planning to get a dog.

Wolf: There is a door at the end of dark, damp corridor. You hear rumbling. What do you do?

    A. L.: Heh – this reminds me of that old adventure game, Zork. I guess I’d first make sure there’s no threatening little dwarf in the corridor with me, then I’d check my inventory, then I’d go open that door. Hopefully it isn’t the entrance to that blasted maze.

Wolf: If you had to pick a weapon, what would it be and why?

    A. L.: Either a Glock or an epee. The Glock for its stopping power, and the epee because I’d have to know how to fence, which would be fun.

Wolf: The world is about to end. What is the first thing you do?

    A. L.: Make sure I know where my wife is so I can be with her.

Wolf: Which is of your characters is your favorite?

    A. L.: Tough one. The one I thought about most while writing was a young woman named Arrizida Yokoi, the main lead in my novel Blood Relations. One of these days I must get back to her story, which remains incomplete.

Wolf: Describe a meal you would be served while visiting another world.

    A. L.: A selection of flavored and scented gasses, some thick, some thin, laced with nanobots that enter your body via your taste buds and create a mild hallucinogenic effect.

Wolf: What story are you working on now?

    A. L.: Several! One is a YA tale of time-travel, one is a chapter book reminiscent of Edward Eager’s work, and one is a solarpunk book. I do have several short stories clamoring for my time; I’ll get to ‘em eventually. I tend to work on stories in batches, between books.

  • WHEN GRAY SURROUNDS A WEARY HEART: A #HoldOnToTheLight Post

Holdontothelight FB BannerWHEN GRAY SURROUNDS A WEARY HEART

Tired despite hours of sleep, my head sinks into the pillow

Morning’s light gives no warmth or peace with its rays

Only clouds of pointless dust in an indifferent world

Rising is pointless when you’re numb to everything

Except the smothering weight that presses down

To choke what little light remains

    Nothing can pierce the shroud

    No reason to continue

    To struggle forward

    To breathe

    Live

    A touch

    Warm and furry

    persistent in its desire

    Wakes me from the dark

Pulls me back into the light

To struggle onward out of the gray

Depression; unhappiness; despair; sadness; downheartedness; misery; hopelessness; melancholy; dejection; gloominess; despondency; gloom; cheerlessness; joylessness; glumness; – They all mean the same thing.

More than 15 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with depression. Because of social stigma, many do not seek treatment or won’t admit they have a problem. Depression is more than feeling a little sad. It’s an all over gray feeling that won’t go away. Have you ever started crying for no apparent reason and couldn’t stop? Depression sucks the joy out of everything, but it doesn’t need to. The hardest thing is admitting to yourself that you are depressed. Talk to someone, I did and it made a world of difference. I resisted for a long time. I wish I hadn’t. If one form of treatment doesn’t help, try another. Remember, you are not alone. Keep holding onto the light.

  • INFINITY

20151205_101845 (2)Jacob stumbled to the pool and plunged his head into the water. Somewhere in the back of his mind a voice told him to take sips, but he ignored it, gulping in the tepid liquid. Then his stomach twisted and he heaved.

Exhaustion and dehydration left him trembling in the blazing heat. Once his stomach settled he drank again, this time, small mouthfuls. He closed his eyes to ease the throbbing in his head. If only he could remember how he got here. Two days of wandering this endless, barren landscape and he still had no clue.

A deep rumbling set his heart racing. An earthquake was the last thing he needed. He looked across the deep ravines that riddled the canyon. It went on forever. One of the giant plateaus swayed back and forth and a rock at the top swung around. Two beady black eyes stared at him.

The breath caught in Jacob’s throat. It had to be heatstroke playing with his mind. Rocks didn’t have eyes. He dunked his head again, trying to ignore the sound of grinding stone.

    “Share,” said a booming voice.

Jacob scrambled away from the pool, staring at the stone face above him, then waved the creature to the water. The giant tortoise drank deeply then blinked at him.

    “Remember,” said the tortoise.

Tears filled Jacob’s eyes. His child, alone, in a locked car. A copper haze covered his vision then he woke to begin the cycle again.

  • TECHNOLOGY FAIL

A few weeks ago, only two weeks before STAR TOUCHED’s release, my computer had an epic fail. I spent three short days without a reliable computer while I struggled to get the new one set up and running. It felt like a month. Both a blessing and a curse, technology has made our world smaller and brought us together while also highlighting our faults. Our society has become very reliant on it.

So, what would happen if we didn’t have any modern technology? No phones; no computers; no electricity or refrigeration; limited or no communication with the rest of the world. Ask the people whose homes were flattened by the recent hurricanes what it’s like. They are living that nightmare right now.

The post cataclysmic world in STAR TOUCHED deals with those same issues. What would you do if all your technology stopped working? Good thing I would still have my trusty pad of paper…and no social media to distract me from writing.

Eighteen year old Tatiana is running from her past and her Star-touched powers eight years after a meteor devastates earth’s population.

Her power to heal is sometimes overshadowed by the ability to create ravaging fires. Fleeing the fear induced persecution of those like her, Tatiana seeks refuge in a small town she once visited. This civil haven, in a world where society has broken down, is beginning to crumble. Tatiana is once again left with the choice to flee or to stay and fight for the new life she has built. Only by harnessing the very forces that haunt her can Tatiana save her friends… and herself.

“A unique and finely crafted debut novel, the characters touched my heart as I was drawn into their plight and compelled to finish!”

     — New York Times bestselling Author Maria V. Snyder

“[Star Touched] is fast-paced with well-defined characters and dialog that snaps. The ravaged, post-technological American society is depicted with sure strokes. The story draws one in and keeps one reading. And that’s exactly what one wants from a book.”

     — “A.L. Sirois, author of THE BOHEMIAN MAGICIAN.”

“A great YA dystopian novel exploring the challenges of being different, acceptance, maturity, and friendship. Get Star Touched by A.L. Kaplan as soon as it launches in October.”

    — Steven Southard
