Charming Hanukkah Guide
A little dragon takes us on a charming journey through the fun and serious aspects of the Hanukkah holiday. I loved the author’s appealing drawings and I was glad to have her recipe for the potato latkes at the end of the story. If you want to have your own Hanukkah celebration, this picture book tells you everything you need to know.

All Three Grandkids Enjoyed it!
I LOVE THIS BOOK and am happy I bought it! The illustrations are gorgeous as is the color palette. The story is informative and meaningful. All three of my grands enjoyed it, as the eldest (age 9) read it to the younger two (ages 7 and 2).

Dreidels, Dragons and Delightful
Perfect to introduce the holiday to a young child. Love the illustrations (and the caution to let Daddy do the latke cooking.) Definitely a book that will be handed from one generation to the next.

The Seastead Chronicles is a nice collection of stories all connected by underwater cultures and communities. Steven Southard has created a rich undersea culture with varying beliefs and traditions. Even the language and music are water centric.
The stories range from mysterious islands that rise and sink, to smugglers in ships that mimic whales. There are war mongering dictators and religious fanatics along with goodhearted people and nods to racism and overcoming hate. It just goes to show that no matter where it lives, humanity suffers the same faults and weaknesses along with the unending resilience to do more than simply survive. To grow, learn, and defeat obstacles.
Some of my favorite stories were Eyes of Blue, which was about a whale poacher, and Gazelle’s Last Run, an exciting story concerning a smuggler. I love the way that the first story, Arrow of Life, comes full circle with the last story, The Whole Fish.
Exciting debut novel. Placed in 1923 London, this alternate history blends dragons with fantasy, civil unrest, a budding romance, and a corrupt government.
In an oppressive society split into three classes, Viv is racked with guilt over getting her best friend sent down to Third Class. Now her biggest worry is getting a summer internship to study dragon languages and keep her little sister safe. But her life takes a sharp turn when her parents and cousin are arrested and a civil war breaks out.
S. F. Williamson does an excellent job creating multiple dragons and dragon cultures, weaving them seamlessly into a world where dragons and humans have a tenuous peace. I look forward to reading the next book.
The Dragonet Prophecy by Tui T. Sutherland, is an intriguing story about a group of five dragonets that have been raised in isolation so they can fulfill a prophecy that they end the war.
Clay is a mudwing dragonet, but he knows next to nothing about his own people and how they live. He is determined to protect his friends and prove that he isn’t the vicious killer their guardians believe his is. When the dragonets leave the safety of their cave, they are thrust into a cruel world where the different dragon species are divided behind the three sister dragons vying to be crowned the ultimate ruler.
The different types of dragons and their cultures in this book are fascinating. I loved the interactions between the dragonets and how Clay keeps them together. There were several twists and revelations. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
The Down Deep, Catherine Asaro’s latest novel, is an exciting story with a gripping twist that I didn’t expect and thoroughly enjoyed.
Colonel Lavinda Majda and retired Major Bhaajan, travel to the Undercity to try to build a relationship and trust between their two peoples. Overcoming more than hundreds of years of mistrust is no easy task, especially with vast cultural and language differences. Something as simple as a smile or name means different things to each of them. Even the number of syllables in a word can cause problems. One wrong step could put all their lives in danger.
To most residents of Cries the “savages” that live in the Undercity are inferior, less than human. Yet they need the unique abilities that the Undercity dwellers have. Lavanda is an exceptional woman, part of the privileged elite. She is fiercely loyal to her people, yet with a compassion and openness to learn about the Undercity and accept them as who they are.
Bhaaj was born in the undercity, where people struggle to survive. It is one of the poorest places on Raylicon and a sharp contrast to the wealthy city of Cries. In the Undercity, the strong survive and protect the ones they love, while the weak perish. Clean water and food are the most valuable items. But those who live there have a beautiful and rich culture that the people in Cries know nothing about.
The Down Deep has great tension and pacing with intriguing characters. They even surprise themselves at times. Asaro cleverly showcases the cultural differences between the Undercity and Cries through both Bhaaj’s and Lavinda’s eyes. Past events are woven into the narrative making it easy to follow without having read previous books in the universe. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Another fantastic book from Maria V. Snyder. While THE STUDY OF MAGIC takes place at the same time as MAGIC STUDY, there were a whole bunch of exciting things that happened before Valek met up with Yelena again in Magic Study. That means there are more wonderful and exciting tales to tell. Told from Valek’s point of view, this book will not disappoint.
Wow, what a wild ride. The Hanging City is an exciting story with a strong theme of prejudice, but at its heart, it is about love and acceptance.
Since she was twelve years old, Lark has been running from her unusual ability to instill fear in others and a cruel father who bullies and uses her power for his own gains. So desperate for a place she can call home in this drought-stricken world, Lark seeks shelter with the trolls, mortal enemies of humans. What she discovers is a society unlike any she’s encountered, but far from the mindless monsters of legend.
I hope Charlie N. Holmberg has a sequel planned, because I would love to see more of this world and the characters.

STORM FORGED, by Patrick Dugan, is full of exciting twists and compelling characters that kept me reading non-stop.
Tommy can’t seem to get a break: Collared and branded a traitor at age five just because he was born with a psychic gift. Bullied and beaten at school daily. Verbally abused by teachers and generally scorned by the Norms. — And that’s on a good day. He lives with the constant fear that he’ll be gassed while locked in the room he and other gifted are forced into during detention and some school event, or whisked away to the Block, never to be seen again. Add the typical teenage issues and you get the picture of his life. As Tommy’s life spirals out of his control, he learns secrets about his family and the truth about the country’s past.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the moral and political aspect of this story. The totalitarian government lies to the public, twists the truth and even murders its own citizens to perpetuate its lies. It’s a frightening world that looms on our own horizon as I write this review.
Removing or denying the rights of people just because of how they are born is wrong, immoral, and a violation of our constitution.
Now, on to read UNBREAKABLE STORM, the next book in this exciting series.
