    All Three Grandkids Enjoyed it!

I LOVE THIS BOOK and am happy I bought it! The illustrations are gorgeous as is the color palette. The story is informative and meaningful. All three of my grands enjoyed it, as the eldest (age 9) read it to the younger two (ages 7 and 2).

    Dreidels, Dragons and Delightful

Perfect to introduce the holiday to a young child. Love the illustrations (and the caution to let Daddy do the latke cooking.) Definitely a book that will be handed from one generation to the next.

  • WOLF NOTES: An Uncommon Interview – Patrick Dugan

081Welcome to WOLF NOTES, where interview questions stray from the rest of the pack. It’s nice to know the usual stuff like where an author gets their inspiration and why they write, but sometimes we need a little fun in our lives.

Patrick Dugan WebPatrick Dugan was born in the far north of New York, where the cold winds blow. This meant lots of time for reading over the long winters. His parents didn’t care what he read as long as he did. This started with a steady diet of comics and science fiction novels, Heinlein being his favorite in those days.
After two degrees and lots of odd jobs, Charlotte, North Carolina beckoned. Packing up his dog sled he headed for warmer climes and a lot less snow. After working for Blockbuster Video, he moved into IT to become a programmer. Still a voracious reader, he read all sorts of great books. Rothfuss, Butcher, Duncan, Sanderson, Hobb, Farland and Feist sparked his imagination and he started writing horribly. Bad short stories and worse novels would follow. Thankfully these are nowhere to be found.
The book (Storm Forged) was passed around to avid readers for feedback and, much to his surprise, people loved it. Enter John Hartness of Falstaff books. He had read it and loved it. It was picked up in August 2017 with the release date of May 29th 2018.
There are more books planned for the Storm Forged series with releases tentatively planned for 2019 and 2020. So there is a lot more to come!

Wolf: If you could be any animal in the universe, what would it be and why?

Patrick: I’d love to be a dragon. Being able to fly and sleep for long periods of time sounds really awesome given how busy I usually am.

Wolf: Dragons are cool. If you had to pick a weapon, what would it be and why?

Patrick: I love knives and swords since they are useful and can be beautiful. My favorite is the Karambit. The sweep of the blade is really elegant and easily concealable.

Wolf: That’s one cool looking knife. Do you consider yourself a cat person, or a dog person?

Patrick: I am a dog person. We just got a new Cavalier King Charles puppy named Blaze. He’s my writing buddy.

Wolf: Love the big eyes on Cavaliers. If you could have a super power, what would it be?

Patrick: I write super heroes so I’ve thought a lot about this one. I’d go with teleportation. No more driving in rush hour and just an instant hop to target to get what I forgot, which I always do.

Wolf: Wish I could do that. What five items would you want to have in a post-cataclysmic world?

Patrick: A good utility knife, a water purification system, a solar powered light, a good pair of boots and a solar powered kindle with a lot of books on it.

Wolf: Excellent choices. Which of your characters is your favorite?

Patrick: In my published works, Abby is my favorite character. I hadn’t intended for her to be in the book at all, then she appeared and made herself at home. I think she is a damaged person dealing with a world that hates her and yet has a fierce love for her family. In my soon-to-be published, Its Gelsey, but you’ll have to wait to hear about her later.

Wolf: I look forward to it. What story are you working on now?

Patrick: I am working on two stories. One is a steampunk novella set is a world ruled by wizards. The other is an Urban Fantasy about a witch coven.

Wolf: They sound like fun. What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Patrick: I love to play video games. My wife and kids all play Warcraft and its fun to quest together. I also brew beer for the bar we have in the basement. It has been dubbed the secret lair after the store in Storm Forged.

Wolf: I’ll drink to that. How did you come up with the idea for your first novel?

Patrick: My son loved Power Rangers when he was small and we would watch them for hours together. It got me thinking that the normal people would be sick and tired of having their homes and businesses destroyed on a weekly basis and would tell them to leave since the monsters went where they were. I changed it to super heroes after they’d been outlawed and Storm Forged was born.

  • WOLF NOTES: An Uncommon Interview – Juliana Spink Mills

081Welcome to WOLF NOTES, where interview questions stray from the rest of the pack. It’s nice to know the usual stuff like where an author gets their inspiration and why they write, but sometimes we need a little fun in our lives.

2017-11-09 09.36.39-2Juliana Spink Mills was born in England but grew up in Brazil. Now she lives in Connecticut and writes science fiction and fantasy. She is the author of Heart Blade and Night Blade, the first two books in the young adult Blade Hunt Chronicles urban fantasy series. Her short stories have appeared in anthologies and online publications. Besides writing, Juliana works as a Portuguese/English translator, and as a teen library assistant. She watches way too many TV shows, and loves to get lost in a good book. Her dream is to move to Narnia when she grows up. Or possibly Middle Earth, if she’s allowed a very small dragon of her own.

Wolf: Good luck getting a dragon. I think there’s a waiting list. If you had to pick a weapon, what would it be and why?

Juliana: Although the characters in my Urban Fantasy series tend to use swords, and I actually did a year of longsword lessons in the name of research when I was writing the first novel, I’ve always wanted to learn archery. Put that down to a childhood obsession with Robin Hood!

Wolf: Archery has always been one of my favorite sports. You’ve just been turned into a plant. Describe yourself.

Juliana: I’m a nice fat dandelion sitting in the sunshine in a tangled overgrown lawn. My flowers bring a splash of color to people’s lives. My leaves feed the wild rabbits. My seeds give wishes and please small children. I might be a ‘common weed’, but I’m a glorious one.

heart blade front cover finalWolf: Dandelions are great. They also make great fritters. Do you consider yourself a cat person, or a dog person?

Juliana: I love both, but I’m allergic to cats so sadly can’t have one at home. We do have a six-month-old rescue pup named Misty, though. (Yes, like from Pokémon.) She’s awesome, when she isn’t chewing everything in sight.

Wolf: Yup, that’s a pup. I’m partial to dogs myself. While walking in the woods you come across…

Juliana: The inspiration for my next novel! I always have an eye open for ideas, as you never know what will emerge from a simple walk. And speaking of woods, I have a sci fi thriller I’ve been working on which actually draws inspiration from the Amazon jungle…

Wolf: Sounds interesting. Let me know when it comes out. If you could have a super power, what would it be?

Juliana: My actual superpower is walking into things, which is kind of a lame skillset and results in lots of bruising. If I could choose a power, it would be super speed. I could get so much done, and still have time for reading and binge-watching TV shows.

Wolf: Or bump into things faster. There is a door at the end of a dark, damp corridor. You hear rumbling. What do you do?

Juliana: Open it, of course. There is clearly a dragon behind it and all dragons should absolutely be set free. Fly, you amazing fire-breathing beastie, fly!

Wolf: Love it. Which of your characters is your favorite?

Juliana: My half-demon Camille! Probably because her personality is closest to my own. Well, apart from the fact that I’m not actually an immortal succubus, of course.

Wolf: Good to know. What is your favorite body of water and why? (river, ocean, waterfall, puddle, bottle…)

Juliana: The Iguaçu Falls that straddle Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina are amazing! I could have stood there and watched them for days. This is one of those ‘marvels of the world’ that truly lives up to its hype.

Wolf: I’ll have to put it on my list of things to see. What story are you working on now?

nightblade_frontJuliana: I’m working on Star Blade, the third and final book in my Urban Fantasy trilogy. It’s a weird feeling, writing a series ending. There are so many loose ends I have to remember to tie up, so it’s almost overwhelming, but at the same time it feels good to finally work towards the happily ever after my characters deserve.

  • KEEP OUT: A LITTLE DRAGON ADVENTURE

    Keep Out

Step one, get past the iron door barring the cave. Luckily, it was only eight feet tall. I grimaced at a yell in my head. One of the down sides of being a telepath was getting sucked into impromptu rescues.

    “I’m coming,” I sent back.

I’d slipped past enough ‘Keep Out” signs to understand this one even if I didn’t know the language. I focused on the pipe just above the door. There was a small pop, and then I was peering down an empty hallway. Teleporting had its limits so I decided to hoof it down the steep ramp, keeping an eye out for guards.

I’d like to say my superior stalking skills ensured that I wasn’t spotted on the mile-long path, but that would be lying. The bottom was another story. One of the guards managed to trigger an alarm before I knocked him out.

    “Hurry!”

“I am,” I said, fumbling with the keys.

Some prisoners are just too darn impatient. A satisfying click heralded my success. The door creaked open…onto another door.

    “You’ve got to be kidding.”

A few other choice words slipped out while I worked the second lock. Three more doors and a leg shackle later the dragon was free, sort of. She trembled as the guards charged, firing weapons. Dispensing with the usual dragon greeting, I grabbed her neck and focused on a field several miles away. A soft pop announced the teleport. Score one for Little Dragon; soldiers zero.

After a quick thank you, the dragon launched herself into the air. Seeing a dragon soar is a thing of beauty, and not one likely to be viewed on earth. Now, if I could just figure out how to teleport myself home. Or at least figure out what planet I was on. Danged. Sleep teleporting really sucks.

  • Mirage

    20151207_120422

“Damn it, Joe. We’ve been searching for hours. That pet of yours could be anywhere.”

Joe bit his lip as he scanned the landscape. “She’s just playing hide and seek. We’ll find her.”

Billy wiped the sweat from his face. “No we won’t. That chameleon could be right in front of us and we wouldn’t see it. You should never have let it outside.”

“Wasn’t right to keep her locked up. Creature like that needs to fly.”

“Well it flew alright, probably into the next county. Let them deal with it.”

    “I’m not giving up.”

“Well I’m hot, tired, and I’ve seen at least four disappearing ponds. I need a drink.”

“Let’s just check the next few sand dunes. She’s got to be close.” He gave a shrill whistle and trudged up the next sandy slope. “Come on baby, where are you? Come to papa.”

“Get real, Joe. It’s a bloody reptile, not a dog.”

Joe felt heat flush his face. He glared at Billy. “She’s smarter than any dog.”

    “Not even close. My…what the….”

Sand shifted under Billy’s feet, and he tumbled down the dune. A pair of fist sized golden orbs peered at Joe, then Billy’s prone figure. Rows of jagged teeth appeared and a rumbling laugh filled the air.

“There’s my little Mirage,” said Joe. Her tail thrashed back and forth as he scratched behind her leathery wing. “You showed him who’s smarter. Great camouflage.”

Billy sighed. “You win, but you’re concept of size is really skewed.”
