    Book Review: THE DOWN DEEP

The Down Deep, Catherine Asaro’s latest novel, is an exciting story with a gripping twist that I didn’t expect and thoroughly enjoyed.

Colonel Lavinda Majda and retired Major Bhaajan, travel to the Undercity to try to build a relationship and trust between their two peoples. Overcoming more than hundreds of years of mistrust is no easy task, especially with vast cultural and language differences. Something as simple as a smile or name means different things to each of them. Even the number of syllables in a word can cause problems. One wrong step could put all their lives in danger.

To most residents of Cries the “savages” that live in the Undercity are inferior, less than human. Yet they need the unique abilities that the Undercity dwellers have. Lavanda is an exceptional woman, part of the privileged elite. She is fiercely loyal to her people, yet with a compassion and openness to learn about the Undercity and accept them as who they are.

Bhaaj was born in the undercity, where people struggle to survive. It is one of the poorest places on Raylicon and a sharp contrast to the wealthy city of Cries. In the Undercity, the strong survive and protect the ones they love, while the weak perish. Clean water and food are the most valuable items. But those who live there have a beautiful and rich culture that the people in Cries know nothing about.

The Down Deep has great tension and pacing with intriguing characters. They even surprise themselves at times. Asaro cleverly showcases the cultural differences between the Undercity and Cries through both Bhaaj’s and Lavinda’s eyes. Past events are woven into the narrative making it easy to follow without having read previous books in the universe. I look forward to reading more from this author.

    Review by Rea Keech

Star Touched is a dystopian novel that takes place after a terrible Cataclysm has destroyed much of the country. It is also a fantasy novel in which some survivors of the Cataclysm have received magical powers. And it is a young adult novel with the theme of accepting others who are different and a focus on teenage and young twenties characters, with older characters depicted as caring parental figures or cruel bullies.

“This novel grabbed me from the first page and didn’t let go! The characters and setting were richly developed, especially the main character, Tatiana. I found myself rooting for her and the townspeople she encounters along the way, holding onto the edge of my seat along a roller coaster ride of a story. Bravo, I can’t wait for A.L. Kaplan’s next book!”

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating glimpse into a surprising perspective from the world of Star Touched

I can say with certainty that this short but exciting vignette makes for a great read whether it is your introduction to the universe of Star Touched or if you are already a fan of the preceding novel. Author A.L. Kaplan crafts immediate intrigue in the first lines that holds your attention captive until the final words with an excellent pacing and a compelling atmosphere of some urgent mystery. I truly felt myself drawn into the perspective of the character, helpless to do anything but read on.

If you find yourself enjoying this taste of the lore of Star Touched, then you will surely enjoy the novel that started it! If you have already had the pleasure of reading it, then this brief return to that shattered world will have your heart racing like the wings of a hummingbird!

  • BOOK REVIEW – THE CITY OF ZIRDAI BY MARIA V. SNYDER

Maria V. Snyder’s skill in creating fascinating worlds with intricate societies strikes true again in The City of Zirdai. This exciting tale has several twists as Shyla struggles to learn about magic and the power of The Eyes of Tambourah, survive in a barely habitual environment, and stay ahead of the Water Prince and Heliacal Priestess who both want The Eyes for themselves. Even some of her own people, within the Invisible Sword, treat her with hostility and mistrust. As for the people of Zirdai, many in the city consider Shyla to be cursed by the Sun goddess because of her blond, Sun-Kissed hair. That doesn’t stop her from trying to stop the corrupt rulers that that are smothering the city’s residents. Shyla is a true hero willing to sacrifice herself to save others.

I look forward to reading The King of Koraha, the final book in this series.

  • Book Review: STORM FORGED

STORM FORGED, by Patrick Dugan, is full of exciting twists and compelling characters that kept me reading non-stop.

Tommy can’t seem to get a break: Collared and branded a traitor at age five just because he was born with a psychic gift. Bullied and beaten at school daily. Verbally abused by teachers and generally scorned by the Norms. — And that’s on a good day. He lives with the constant fear that he’ll be gassed while locked in the room he and other gifted are forced into during detention and some school event, or whisked away to the Block, never to be seen again. Add the typical teenage issues and you get the picture of his life. As Tommy’s life spirals out of his control, he learns secrets about his family and the truth about the country’s past.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the moral and political aspect of this story. The totalitarian government lies to the public, twists the truth and even murders its own citizens to perpetuate its lies. It’s a frightening world that looms on our own horizon as I write this review.

Removing or denying the rights of people just because of how they are born is wrong, immoral, and a violation of our constitution.

Now, on to read UNBREAKABLE STORM, the next book in this exciting series.
