  • BOOK REVIEW – THE CITY OF ZIRDAI BY MARIA V. SNYDER

Maria V. Snyder’s skill in creating fascinating worlds with intricate societies strikes true again in The City of Zirdai. This exciting tale has several twists as Shyla struggles to learn about magic and the power of The Eyes of Tambourah, survive in a barely habitual environment, and stay ahead of the Water Prince and Heliacal Priestess who both want The Eyes for themselves. Even some of her own people, within the Invisible Sword, treat her with hostility and mistrust. As for the people of Zirdai, many in the city consider Shyla to be cursed by the Sun goddess because of her blond, Sun-Kissed hair. That doesn’t stop her from trying to stop the corrupt rulers that that are smothering the city’s residents. Shyla is a true hero willing to sacrifice herself to save others.

I look forward to reading The King of Koraha, the final book in this series.

  • OCEAN OF SAND

Careful of who you step on. Find out what happens to this fellow.

Brent tumbled down the side of another sand dune, landing in a crumpled heap at the bottom. Three days of wandering this desert under an unrelenting sky. No food. No water. There wasn’t even night on this desolate world, only glaring daylight. The only signs of life he’d seen since arriving, were the dried bones of past prisoners. This wasn’t a punishment. It was torture.

Spitting gritty particles out of his mouth, Brent struggled to his feet and trudged on. Before he got caught up in it, Brent used to believe in the criminal justice system. That was before he was set up by his best friend. Franklin’s liberal use of bribes had ensured Brent’s conviction.

“Die, or go insane and die.” Those were the choices they gave him before digital transportation. Brent had another – escape and revenge.

The sand beneath his feet shifted, pulling him toward a dark opening. “No!” he cried, scrambling away from the sinkhole.

Nails and fingers raw from digging at the coarse sand, Brent fell into the pit, wondering what other hell awaited him. For a moment, he hung in midair, then woke in the prison transport center. He blinked at the giant hourglass on the table, watching as bits of old bone fell into the bottom portion. Was it real?

“You’ve been granted an appeal,” said his lawyer, holding out a credit transfer tablet.

Brent smiled as he approved the extra ‘lawyer’s fees’. This time he’d have his revenge

  • SHORE 1: AN INHOSPITABLE SHORE

My skin felt like over-cooked bacon. There was no water or food on this island, only a few spiny shrubs. Dehydration would probably get me first. Already my tongue felt thick and heavy. It would have been better to have drowned with the rest of the crew. Instead, I floated for days before washing up on this sandy deathtrap.

It was midday when I collapsed on the coarse sand. Something snapped in the scrubby growth. I opened my eyes. The sun hung low. I strained to hear past the steady crash of waves. Another rustle, even closer. Maybe it was something to eat. I scanned the landscape.

A dark shadow moved toward me. Two giant eyes peered from the darkness. Vertical slits reflected yellow in the failing light. My stomach twisted. To have come so far only to be eaten by a beast was fate’s ultimate cruel prank.

I forced my cracked lips open. “Make it quick.”

The beast towered over my prone body. Instead of death, furry arms scooped me up like a babe. I was too stunned and exhausted to fight. It carried me down a ramp into a bunker and place me on a bed.

    “Catherine. We have a guest.”

Another creature appeared. “Poor thing’s dried out and terrified, Tom. Bring me some cactus juice.”

I sipped the offered juice and let my feline rescuers fuss over me. If this was a hallucination, it was a good one. If not, I’d have an interesting story to tell.
